For ages, Graffiti have been a unique way of expression. An unorthodox form of art. It has existed since ancient times. Examples of graffiti have been found from ancient Greek civilizations to the Roman Empire. In ancient times people drew graffiti just by scratching, marking or just by simply writing words.
Graffiti usually contain a social or political message or just to mark someone's territory. Nowadays people actually use spray paints, marker pens etc. to draw graffiti. But then again, drawing graffiti on someone else' s property is a crime. In some countries it is considered as defacement or vandalism. In the late 20th century and the 21st century graffiti has evolved into a new kind of culture and art. And some graffiti are so amazing and fascinating that its worth of being displayed in galleries and exhibitions. Graffiti have become a different type of for people who are related to underground hip hop/rap/R n' B music, b-boying and the kind of lifestyle that is not so well-known to general public.
But there is a common controversy surrounding graffiti, as because most of them, are drawn on public properties and it is a crime.
There is no doubt, that graffitists are, indeed, people with some talent.
The very first graffitis date back to about 30,000 BCE. Most of those prehistoric graffitis exist in caves and are usually drawn with animal bones and pigments. These graffitis/illustrations often referred to ancient Gods, animals, ancient wildlife. Such graffitis are found in Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Rome and many more.
The first "modern-style" graffiti, from the past, is found in Ephesus, Greece (now turkey). People say that it is actually an advert for prostitution.
The ancient Romans and Egyptians curved monuments and walls to draw graffiti. The messages that these graffiti usually bear vary from time to time. For example, in the past, graffiti bore simple messages like love declarations, political rhetoric thoughts and idea. But now, it has changed into mainly political and social ideals.
Graffiti are often though to be in a "part and parcel" connection with hip hop culture. However, aside from that, there actually are a lot of notable instances of graffiti in this century. Graffiti are also drawn on some well-known places like the Berlin wall.
In 1979, art dealer Claudio Bruni gave Lee Quinones and Fab5Freddy were given a gallery display of graffiti. For many "Non-New Yorkers" it was pretty uncommon and it was the first time they came across such an art form. Later one, these two turned into legends, with their unique style and talent, leaving graffiti in subways, it was like as if by seeing them people knew it was either Lee or Fab.
It had been seen that people often leave their traces on wet cement or concrete.
Or, sometimes people just draw these to share their internal feelings, attraction and dedication towards each other.
Back to the hip hop madness. Graffiti and hip hop have been like a cup of morning tea and newspaper. Here are a couple of examples of some wonderful graffiti.
